Wrexham’s Christmas Miracle: Jay Rodriguez Returns to the Squad

Wrexham AFC has pulled off a stunning move by adding Jay Rodriguez, a one-cap former England international, to their Championship squad list. The 36-year-old striker has been out of action since April due to a stress fracture in his ankle.

Details

Rodriguez, who signed for Wrexham from Burnley in January on an 18-month contract, has been a significant absentee from the team. Despite being the club’s third-highest earner, reportedly pocketing £25,000 per week, he hasn’t played in a league match for Wrexham since their 2-1 victory over Blackpool on April 21.
The EFL’s rules have allowed Wrexham to make the switch earlier than expected, and Rodriguez will be available for selection from Boxing Day when Phil Parkinson’s team takes on Sheffield United. This move is a major comeback for the experienced striker, who has been recovering from his injury.

Impact on the Team

Rodriguez’s return will offer Parkinson an additional attacking option during a challenging part of the season. Wrexham currently sit 15th in the Championship table, and his comeback will provide a much-needed boost to the team.
However, the news is overshadowed by the injury suffered by Lewis O’Brien, who sustained a serious injury during the match against Swansea on Friday night. O’Brien had only been on the pitch for seven minutes in the second half when he was brought down by a robust challenge from Ethan Galbraith.

Manager’s Reaction

Parkinson was critical of the tackle, saying it was “high, it’s dangerous, and I think he [Galbraith] is lucky not to get a red.” He also expressed concern about O’Brien’s injury, stating that it doesn’t look good and that he’s a tough player who’s not coming off unless it’s something really serious.
