Tragic Death of Billy Vigar: Family Receives Update on Investigations

Former Arsenal striker Billy Vigar, who tragically passed away at the age of 21 in September, has left behind a family seeking answers. The young footballer suffered a significant brain injury after colliding with a concrete wall during a non-league match for Chichester City at Wingate & Finchley FC.
The incident occurred on September 20, and since then, the Football Association, Metropolitan Police, and Barnet Council have been conducting separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding Vigar’s death. A pre-inquest hearing was held at Barnet Coroner’s Court, where senior coroner Andrew Walker warned Vigar’s family that the inquest would be a lengthy process.

Investigations Underway

The Metropolitan Police investigation, led by Det Supt Colin Chandler, is expected to take four to six weeks and requires cooperation from the Football Association. Obi Oranu, service manager for commercial environmental health at Barnet Council, has confirmed that the concrete wall at the stadium has been removed and is investigating potential health and safety breaches at Wingate & Finchley FC.
The Professional Footballers’ Association is also conducting its own investigation into the tragedy. Ben Wright, from the PFA, stated that walls around pitches have been an issue of player safety for their membership, which they have been working to resolve for several years.

Football Association Review

Following Vigar’s death, the Football Association announced that it would review the perimeter walls and boundaries of non-league football pitches. This review comes after a similar incident involving Bath City player Alex Fletcher, who collided with concrete advertising hoardings in November 2022.
The FA has confirmed that it will work with Leagues, Clubs, and relevant stakeholders to identify and implement additional measures to mitigate potential safety risks. This review aims to ensure the health and safety of participants and spectators at the National League System level.

Tributes were paid to Billy Vigar after his death, with the FA releasing a statement expressing its condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones. The PFA has also been working to support Vigar’s family and the football community during this difficult time.
