Speaking ahead of the Red Devils’ trip to Aston Villa on Sunday, Amorim acknowledged that his comments may have been perceived as harsh, but he insisted that they were necessary to address the issue of entitlement within the club.
“I think it’s the feeling of entitlement that we have in our club,” Amorim said. “Sometimes strong words are not bad words, sometimes difficult moments are not a bad thing for kids. We don’t need to always be accolades in everything, every situation.”
Amorim’s comments were in response to a question about his decision not to use academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo in recent matches. The manager suggested that Amass and Obi, who have both been on loan this season, were not at the level required for United at the moment.
The comments sparked a reaction from both players, who posted pictures on their Instagram accounts seemingly in response to Amorim’s comments. However, both posts were subsequently deleted.
Amorim’s defense of his comments has been seen as a message to the Manchester United players, emphasizing the need for a change in culture within the club. The manager has repeatedly stated that his office is open for players to talk to him, and he has encouraged them to express their concerns and opinions.
In a separate development, Amorim has spoken about the situation surrounding Kobbie Mainoo, who has been linked with a departure from the club in the January transfer window. The manager has insisted that there is no problem with Mainoo, and he hopes the midfielder will fight for his future at the club.
