From Marco Reus to Gio Reyna: the men who have bridged the Borussias divide

The rivalry between Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach is one of the fiercest in the Bundesliga, with the two clubs having a long and storied history. But despite their intense rivalry, there have been several players who have made the bold move to switch between the two clubs. In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most notable players who have bridged the Borussias divide.

Marco Reus: The Player Who Came Full Circle

Marco Reus is one of the most iconic players to have played for both Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Born and raised in Dortmund, Reus was initially signed by the club’s youth academy before being released due to concerns over his physical development. However, he went on to establish himself as a top player with Mönchengladbach, scoring 36 goals and providing 18 assists in 97 matches.
Reus’ success with Mönchengladbach caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who signed him in 2012. He went on to become one of the club’s all-time leading scorers, netting 170 goals and providing 131 assists in 429 competitive appearances. Reus also captained the team from 2018 to 2023 and won two DFB Cups.

Gio Reyna: The American Who Made the Switch

Gio Reyna is the latest player to make the move from Borussia Dortmund to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The American midfielder made his debut for Dortmund in 2020 and quickly established himself as a key player, scoring four goals and providing seven assists in 32 Bundesliga matches.
However, Reyna’s progress was hindered by a series of injuries, including a hamstring injury that limited him to just six league starts in the 2022/23 season. He was eventually loaned out to Nottingham Forest, where he struggled to establish himself.
Reyna’s move to Mönchengladbach was seen as a fresh start, but he has struggled to find his footing with the club, making just six league appearances and starting only two games under coach Niko Kovač.

Ramy Bensebaini: The Algerian International

Ramy Bensebaini is another player who has made the switch from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Borussia Dortmund. The Algerian international joined Mönchengladbach in 2018 and quickly established himself as a key player, scoring nine goals in 44 league games.
Bensebaini’s success with Mönchengladbach caught the attention of Dortmund, who signed him in 2023. He has since become a regular starter for the club, playing a key role in their Champions League campaign.

Matthias Ginter: The Versatile Defender

Matthias Ginter is a versatile defender who has played for both Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. The German international joined Dortmund in 2014 and quickly established himself as a key player, winning the Fritz Walter Gold Medal in 2014.
Ginter has also played for Mönchengladbach, where he has been a regular starter in recent seasons. He is known for his versatility and ability to play in multiple positions, making him a valuable asset to any team.
