Former Real Madrid Star Sergio Reguilón Reveals Motivation to Play Alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami
Details
Former Real Madrid left-back Sergio Reguilón has made a significant move to Inter Miami, signing a contract to replace Jordi Alba in the vacant left-back role. In his first interview as a Heron, Reguilón opened up about the motivations behind his decision to join the Fort Lauderdale-based club.
Reguilón, who emerged as a potential long-term successor to Alba with the Spanish national team, has had a tumultuous career. After joining Fundación Real Madrid at the age of nine, he made a strong impression during a loan spell at Sevilla, which led to a €30 million move to Tottenham Hotspur at 23. However, inconsistent form and several loan stints prevented him from reaching his full potential.
Despite being a product of Real Madrid’s academy, Reguilón highlighted the opportunity to play alongside global superstar Lionel Messi as a major factor in his decision to join Inter Miami. “It’s a really exciting reason to come here: to keep winning and keep competing. I won’t lie—coming here to play with Leo is an extra motivation,” he said.
Reguilón also praised the ambitious project that Inter Miami is undertaking, citing the club’s current championship status and the owners’ efforts as key draws. “I think it’s a very ambitious project. It’s a club that’s doing things very well. They’re the current champions, and that’s what attracts me—winning teams,” he stated.
Reguilón’s decision to join Inter Miami comes after several La Liga clubs showed interest in signing him as a free agent, including lucrative offers from Iran worth €4 million net per season. However, the left-back had always been eager to join the MLS club, which began negotiations with him last October.
Reguilón’s Future Plans
Reguilón is eager to claim the starting left-back role in 2026 and is looking to revive his career in MLS. Despite not playing a competitive match since his contract expired in June, he is confident in his abilities and is excited to get started. “I’m really eager to get started, because I’m coming off a few difficult months, and all I want is to compete on the field, give my best, and be happy on the pitch—which is the best thing in life,” he said.
MLS Growth
Reguilón spoke about the rising profile of MLS, citing the league’s growing exposure and competitiveness as key draws. “For example, in Spain I have many friends who follow it, and honestly it’s a league that’s on the rise and doing things very well. In terms of exposure, it keeps growing. It’s becoming more competitive, and that’s also what draws me to it,” he concluded.
