Jets Fire Defensive Coordinator Steve Wilks After Allowing 48 Points to Jaguars
Changes on the Horizon for Aaron Glenn’s Coaching Staff
The New York Jets’ defense hit rock bottom on Sunday, suffering a 48-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, prompting a change in leadership. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks has been let go by head coach Aaron Glenn, who cited the need for a fresh approach to turn the team’s fortunes around.
Wilks’ departure comes on the heels of a dismal performance by the Jets’ defense, which has struggled to contain opposing offenses all season. The unit has allowed 30 or more points six times and 27 or more three other times, with a current streak of 14 games without a takeaway, a record that could be broken if they fail to record one in their remaining games.
The decision to fire Wilks was made late Sunday night, with Glenn informing him of the change on Monday. In a statement, Glenn emphasized the need for a new approach to get the team back on track. “I’m evaluating players, coaches, myself, and I just felt like this was the best decision for right now for the team and for this organization,” he said.
Chris Harris, the Jets’ defensive backs coach, will take over as interim defensive coordinator, calling the plays and assisting with game planning. Harris, a 43-year-old coaching veteran, has been with the Jets since 2016 and has called plays during a preseason game.
Wilks’ tenure with the Jets was marked by struggles, particularly in the secondary, where key players like Will McDonald, Quincy Williams, and Jamien Sherwood have regressed under his guidance. The team’s defensive woes have been well-documented, with a ranking of 28th in defensive EPA and 29th in run defense.
The Jets’ decision to fire Wilks marks the third time he has been let go before or after the end of his first season with a team. He was previously fired by the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers.
