Former PSG Star Opens Up on the Fallout of Neymar and Mbappé’s Relationship

A former teammate of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé has shed light on the deterioration of their relationship at Paris Saint-Germain. Thiago Silva, who played alongside the two stars from 2017 to 2020, shared his insights in an interview with L’Équipe.
The Brazilian defender recalled the early days of Neymar and Mbappé’s partnership, which was marked by a strong connection and a desire to win together. Silva remembered a Trophée des Champions match against Monaco in 2017, where PSG collected a 2-1 win. After the match, Mbappé approached Silva and expressed his desire to join PSG, despite Neymar already being on board.
“At Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappé and Neymar got along well at first, but their relationship deteriorated,” Silva said. “I didn’t understand why they drifted apart. I was no longer at PSG by then. I don’t know which of the two caused the split, but it saddened me.”
Silva’s comments come as Neymar and Mbappé’s relationship has been subject to speculation in recent years. The two stars were instrumental in PSG’s dominance of French soccer, but their partnership eventually cooled, and they went their separate ways.

Neymar’s Recovery Ahead of the World Cup

Silva also spoke about Neymar’s recovery from a serious injury to his left knee. The Brazilian defender defended his teammate, stating that Neymar is doing the right things to prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
“He’s judged unfairly,” Silva said. “I assure you that he is preparing the right way, that he is determined to be at his best for the World Cup. Don’t forget that he is coming off a serious injury to his left knee. Contrary to what people think, Neymar is doing the right things.”
