Barcelona’s Defensive Woes Deepen as Andreas Christensen Suffers Long-Term Injury

Details

FC Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal has suffered a significant setback as the team’s defense continues to grapple with injuries. The latest casualty is Andreas Christensen, who has suffered a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a training session on December 20. The 29-year-old center back will undergo conservative treatment, but the club has not set a specific recovery timeline, with Spanish media reports indicating that he will be sidelined for four to five months.
This injury marks Christensen’s third injury of the 2025-26 season, raising concerns about his physical readiness and his future with the team. His contract expires in July 2026, and frequent injuries have prevented him from securing a regular starting spot. Despite his talent, Christensen’s continuity with the team seems uncertain.

Barcelona’s Defensive Shuffle

In a bid to bolster the defense, Ronald Araujo has made a comeback after his personal problems. The Uruguayan star is set to return to action against Espanyol on January 3, potentially securing a prominent role in the rotation due to Eric Garcia’s role in midfield and Christensen’s injury. Coach Hansi Flick may consider Araujo as a third option in the backline.
However, Barcelona’s poor start to the season has prompted the club to make significant changes to the roster. The team is reportedly chasing a left-footed center back, which could open the door for a potential departure of Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen. While Araujo has not been in top form, Christensen’s contract is set to expire, and he may not receive an offer.

Barcelona’s Center Back Options

The Blaugranas are reportedly determined to make a significant investment in a center back, with Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, and Eric Garcia already part of the team. The club is exploring options such as Nico Schlotterbeck, Alessandro Bastoni, and Pau Torres, who could help reshape the defense.
