Former Ecuador international footballer Mario Pineida, 33, was brutally gunned down at point-blank range by two assailants outside a butcher’s shop in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The shocking incident occurred on Wednesday at approximately 4 pm local time.
Pineida, a full-back for Ecuador’s Serie A side Barcelona Sporting Club, was accompanied by his new partner, Guisella Fernandez, 39, a Peruvian businesswoman. The pair had driven to the shop to purchase a pork shank for a family Christmas meal. Tragically, Pineida’s mother was also present at the scene and suffered minor injuries.
Assassination Caught on Camera
Footage of the incident shows Pineida putting his hands up in the air before one of the assassins opened fire from close range. The second assailant, wearing a motorcycle helmet to conceal their identity, targeted Fernandez. Both victims continued to be shot while on the ground after receiving the initial bullets.
Investigation Underway
Police and the army have surrounded the butcher’s shop, and an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the targeted assassinations. Pineida’s wife, Ana Aguilar, has denied reports that she was also killed, stating that she is alive and well. Aguilar has cooperated with investigators and expressed her grief over Pineida’s passing.
Background on the Victims
Pineida played for Ecuador nine times between 2014 and 2021, while Fernandez had lived in Ecuador for several years and had links to three firms, including a mobile phone business that had accumulated debts.
