Mastantuono and Two Argentine Gems Seek January Move to Secure World Cup Spot Alongside Messi

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner, and the stakes are higher than ever for players vying for a spot on their national teams. In Argentina, a trio of young talents is reportedly seeking a January transfer to boost their chances of joining Lionel Messi in the World Cup squad.

Details

Franco Mastantuono, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder, has requested a move away from Real Madrid this January, citing a lack of playing time due to a groin injury. According to reports, Mastantuono has formally requested a transfer, with Fichajes and El Nacional de Catalunya echoing the claim. The young player’s limited role with the Spanish side has raised concerns about his chances of making Argentina’s final roster for the 2026 World Cup.
Another Argentine gem, Claudio Echeverri, is also seeking a change of scenery. The 19-year-old midfielder has barely played for Bayer Leverkusen, which has cost him his place with the national team. Echeverri is now planning his next step at a club where he can see more regular action, with Manchester City and Girona reportedly interested in signing him on loan.

Competition for World Cup Spots Heats Up

The situations involving Mastantuono, Echeverri, and another young player, Valentin Carboni, are not isolated incidents. Several established players, including Paulo Dybala, have also been linked with potential moves this winter. The wave of midseason changes is directly tied to the ambition of playing at the World Cup.
Argentina boasts a squad packed with top-level talent, especially in attack, but the 26 available spots for the FIFA tournament will not be enough for everyone. Lionel Messi has his place secured, but the competition for the remaining spots is fierce, with players like Enzo Fernandez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Lautaro Martinez appearing close to locks.

Young Talents in the Running

The likes of Mastantuono, Carboni, and Echeverri have been considered in the past and remain in contention, but they also face competition from peers like Nicolas Paz, Alejandro Garnacho, and Facundo Buonanotte. None of them are guaranteed a World Cup spot, making their club performances over the coming months decisive.
