Fergie’s Wrong: Ruben Amorim Fires Back at Sir Alex’s Decade Claim
Manchester United’s Young Boss Disagrees with Legendary Former Manager
‘s Ruben Amorim has responded to Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim that it will take the club another decade to reclaim the Premier League title. In a recent interview, Ferguson stated that it could be ’10 or 11 years’ before United can challenge for the top spot again.
However, Amorim has contradicted Ferguson’s assertion, insisting that the club will be title contenders sooner than expected. “He understands football more than me, especially English football,” Amorim said of Ferguson. “But I think we will not take that long to win a league. I don’t know which manager, but I truly believe we are going to fight for the title in the next years.”
The United boss also defended his captain, Bruno Fernandes, who recently made comments about the entitlement of some players at the club. Amorim praised Fernandes, saying that he is a “big example” and that more players need to follow his example. “He spoke his feelings and when I watch Bruno training and playing, he is a special character,” Amorim said.
Amorim also addressed the club’s injury concerns, confirming that neither Harry Maguire nor Matthijs de Ligt have recovered in time for Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have joined Noussair Mazraoui on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Casemiro is suspended.
Ferguson’s comments were made in an interview in Bahrain, where he also praised Amorim’s personality but admitted that it will not be ‘easy’ to claim the title. “He [Amorim] is a good personality, [but] it is not easy,” Ferguson said. “I remember looking back on my own time there, starting off when Liverpool were the bee’s knees. They were a fantastic club winning the European Cup four times and all that, but then it took them 31 years to win the league again.”
