In a shocking turn of events, Ecuadorian footballer Mario Pineida, 33, has been killed in a drive-by shooting in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, also claimed the life of another person and left a third individual wounded.

According to reports, Pineida was shot by two individuals on motorbikes who opened fire on him, his mother, and another woman outside a shop in Guayaquil. The Ecuadorian interior ministry has dispatched a special police unit to investigate the incident, which is the latest in a string of violent crimes in the city.
Guayaquil is notorious for its high crime rate, with over 1,900 murders recorded between January and September this year, the highest number in Ecuador’s history. The city is also a hotspot for gang violence and drug trafficking, with Ecuadorian president Daniel Noboa vowing to combat the spread of criminal organizations linked to international drug cartels.

Career and Tributes

Pineida, who won nine caps for Ecuador between 2014 and 2021, including appearances in the Copa America tournaments in 2015 and 2017, had a storied career. He started his professional career with Independiente del Valle, where he played from 2010 to 2015, before joining a club in the coastal city of Guayaquil in 2016, where he won two league titles.
Fluminense, a Brazilian club where Pineida had a loan spell in 2022, paid tribute to the late footballer, saying, “Fluminense Football Club received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of Mario Pineida, an athlete who defended the club in 2022. Pineida arrived at the Tricolor at the beginning of the season in which we were crowned together as Carioca champions. Fluminense extends solidarity to his family and friends.”

Escalating Violence in Ecuador

Ecuador is on track to record its most violent year on record, with over 9,000 homicides expected. The country’s interior ministry has pledged to tackle the issue, which has seen a significant increase in violent deaths, with 7,063 recorded last year and a then-record 8,248 in 2023.
