Fabregas: Roma’s Matias Soulé a Great Talent, Senegal Unfair on Assane Diao
Post-Match Analysis
Como coach Cesc Fabregas praised Roma’s Matias Soulé, labelling him a “huge player in future,” after the Argentine’s impressive display in the 1-0 win for Roma. However, Fabregas’ praise was tempered by the injury to Como’s Assane Diao, who pulled up clutching his thigh after a sprint on goal and was forced to limp off after 37 minutes.
Diao’s injury puts him at risk of missing the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal, and Fabregas had already had an “unpleasant” conversation with Senegal coach Pape Thiaw last week. The Como boss had expressed concerns about Diao’s fitness and the pressure being put on him by the Senegalese coach.
“It’s that he said if Diao doesn’t come with us, he won’t go to the World Cup,” Fabregas revealed. “That’s not fair, it plays on the fears of the player, he is 20 years old and has a whole career ahead of him. I don’t agree with this, it was not fair and not right.”
Despite the loss, Fabregas was proud of his team’s performance, stating that they were “competitive to the end” and “maybe deserved a goal.” He also praised Roma’s physicality, saying that they had an “excellent player” in Matias Soulé, who made the difference in the game.
The referee’s decision not to stop play when Jayden Addai was down injured in the build-up to the Roma goal was also a topic of discussion. Fabregas stated that he didn’t expect Roma to put the ball out of play, and that the referee’s decision was “only fair” given the circumstances.
