Wolfsburg Appoints Pirmin Schwegler as New Sporting Director
Former Bundesliga Midfielder Takes the Reins at Top-Flight Rivals
Pirmin Schwegler, a seasoned former Bundesliga midfielder, has been appointed as the new sporting director at Wolfsburg, a move that marks a significant shift in the club’s leadership. Schwegler, who has spent the past few years working behind the scenes at various German clubs, will take over the reins from Sebastian Schindzielorz, who departed the position in November 2025.
Background and Experience
Schwegler, a 14-time Switzerland international, made 262 Bundesliga appearances during his playing career, representing Bayer Leverkusen, Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, and Hannover. Since hanging up his boots in August 2020, he has worked as a head scout at Bayern Munich, head of professional football at Hoffenheim, and most recently, in the same role at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Wolfsburg’s Current Situation
Wolfsburg, who last finished in the Bundesliga’s top six in 2020/21, are currently struggling, sitting just a point clear of the relegation zone after 13 matches of the 2025/26 campaign. The club is also without a head coach following Paul Simonis’ dismissal on 9 November 2025. U19s boss Daniel Bauer will continue in the role of interim coach after overseeing a welcome win over Union Berlin last time out.
Quote from Wolfsburg Managing Director
“We’re very pleased that Pirmin Schwegler is joining us,” said Wolfsburg managing director for sport Peter Christiansen. “Our discussions were very positive, and we share a common understanding of how we want to play football at VfL Wolfsburg and what it takes to build our club sustainably: stable structures and close coordination with the academy, as well as with all other departments within the club.”
