Toluca Joins Elite Club with Thrilling Win Over Tigres UANL

Historic Victory Secures Torneo Apertura Title

In a dramatic turn of events, Toluca has become the fourth team in Liga MX history to win back-to-back titles, joining an exclusive club of elite teams. The Red Devils secured the Torneo Apertura title with a thrilling 12-round penalty shootout victory over Tigres UANL on Sunday.
The match was a closely contested affair, with Tigres taking an early lead through a free kick in the 14th minute. However, Toluca refused to give up and mounted a comeback, with Helinho scoring a thunderous strike in the 40th minute to level the aggregate score. Paulinho’s goal in the 52nd minute sealed the comeback, sending the match into extra time.
Despite chances at both ends, neither side could find a winner, leading to a penalty shootout. The shootout was a nail-biting affair, with both goalkeepers, Luis García and Nahuel Guzmán, missing their attempts. In the 12th round, Ángel Correa failed to convert, paving the way for Alexis Vega to score the decisive penalty and seal the title for Toluca.

A New Benchmark for Toluca

With this latest championship, Toluca has reached a new milestone, joining the ranks of Pumas UNAM, Club León, and Atlas as teams that have won back-to-back Liga MX titles since the introduction of short tournaments in 1996. The Red Devils now sit on 12 league titles, tied with Chivas Guadalajara for the second-most in Liga MX history.
The victory is a testament to the team’s resilience and determination, particularly under the guidance of head coach Antonio “Turco” Mohamed, who was appointed in December 2024. The Clausura 2025 title was secured earlier in the year, and this latest triumph further solidifies Toluca’s standing among Liga MX’s most successful teams.
